Draft Day: Mel Kiper and Mike Mayock’s Projections for the Eagles

It’s draft day–who’s excited?! In a few hours, we will shift from trying to anticipate the Eagles’ first round draft pick to dissecting their selection.

But until then, let’s enjoy the last few moments of speculation.

Draft expert Mike Mayock of the NFL Network released his one and only mock draft yesterday, and on it he had Philadelphia selecting a player that some may find as a surprise–Carolina CB Stephon Gilmore.

Of the selection, Mayock said,

We all know that Asante Samuel is out. With Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the final year of his contract, though, I think you have to take a corner. Gilmore is the No. 8 player on my entire board.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper has the Eagles trading up to get their man–moving up to the #7 spot to get Mississippi State DT Fletcher Cox.

In this scenario, the Eagles move up to get a defensive tackle they covet, and Jacksonville gets to move down because they can’t maximize value for a top need here. Cox has a chance to become a Pro Bowl player regardless of where you line him up inside. The Eagles simply have to become stronger against the run, and up the middle in general, and Cox provides an impact.

Cox would be a great pickup for the Birds, and everyone agrees that he will not be around at #15. But are the Eagles willing to move up for him? I’m not so sure that I see them doing that for Cox or any other player.

But we will soon find out.
