Eagles training camp 2012: And so it begins

After a long offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles begin the climb to building a successful 2012 campaign. Rookies and select veterans, including Mike Vick, report to Lehigh University today. Camp will be in full swing with all players reporting on Wednesday.

The start of training camp represents unbridled hope for fans and players alike. Almost half of the men who report to camp will not make it to the regular season with the team. But they’re not thinking about that right now. What matters is that they’re on the roster now. And they will grind to achieve the difficult task on staying on that roster through the regular season.

Right now, there is no record to hold back anyone’s dreams or grand pronouncements. No coaching decisions and no foolish plays to question. There are no losses to ponder. Everything is a win.

Right now, we don’t have to worry about other team’s records. The ground is level for teams across the league. Everyone, from the Super Bowl champions that I don’t want to mention to the rebuilding Colts are starting off with a clean slate. There aren’t many opportunities in life to completely start from scratch, but that’s what NFL teams have each and every year at the beginning of training camp.

From here, there is little time remaining to speculate. We don’t have to wonder how Brandon Graham or Demetress Bell or DeMeco Ryans will do on the field for much longer. We’re about to see them show us what they have been training all offseason to do. Has the secondary¬† found its rhythm? Has the linebacker corps finally found the components they need to succeed? Will the long term deal truly be the medicine DeSean Jackson needed to return to form?

Right now, we have little more than anticipatory questions. The answers will come to us soon. But as Eagles training camp 2012 sets to open, enjoy the start of what’s to come. The passion, sweat and hard work that go into the pursuit of dreams. The hope and excitement about a new and better Birds team. Reality–for better or for worse– will set in soon enough.
