Eagles Briefs: CB Curtis Marsh takes reps with first defense

The full Eagles team had its first practice at training camp on Thursday, and there is news-aplenty from camp. A rundown of some of the news:

-Football means injuries, unfortunately. TE Brent Celek suffered a mild knee sprain, but told reporters that he should be okay. Other tight end news: There’s “mutual interest” between Jeremy Shockey and the Eagles, but seems to be a holding pattern beyond that.

-Safety O.J. Atogwe experienced his first practice with the team. He’s confident that he’ll get the Birds’ defense down quickly:

I don’t believe I’m far behind. I learn defenses quick. I’ve played in the league a long time [this is his eighth season]. Concepts remain the same. Now it’s just assimilating the terminology and doing things the way the coaches want me to do it. For every player, that takes practice.

-DeMeco Ryans has impressed his coaches with his leadership abilities already but Ryans wants more. His aim? To be “the best linebacker in the league.” As for his proven ability to lead, Ryans says, “I’m just worried about getting the football part of it right. All the other stuff will come.”
-Corner Curtis Marsh practiced with the first team defense. Though pleased, he can’t say he was surprised.
I work hard for this. Everything that I get I work towards and feel like I earn.I am not going to say I was surprised but I was definitely happy because it is one step closer to achieving my long-term goals in this league and being the best in the league.
Marsh was called up on the first play run by the first team, which had Dominique-Rodgers Cromartie and Marsh on the outside with Nnamdi Asomugha in the slot.
-DT Derek Landri took reps with Cullen Jenkins in first team practice on Thursday. The Eagles like what they see in Landri, but it’s too early to know the team’s long-term plans to do to replace the injured Mike Patterson.
