It’s no secret that the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive line was decimated by injuries in the 2012 season. Could those woes be spreading into the 2013 season already?
Not so fast. Guard Evan Mathis confirmed that he has undergone an ankle “cleanout” (I believe that is the technical term) that will keep him out of spring workouts. However, he expects to be ready to go in time for training camp this summer. As March draws to a close, football’s focus turns increasingly to the upcoming 2013 NFL draft, which is exactly one month away. The Philadelphia Eagles will get the spotlight early, selecting fourth due to their abysmal 4-12 2012 season. With the stakes so high, Philadelphia cannot afford to miss with their draft choice.
This year’s draft will be different from that of 2012, including the fact that the first and second choice picks are not known. In fact, there is not a clear consensus as to which prospect will be drafted first. There isn’t the killer crop of quarterbacks that we saw last year. But the draft is always different animal from year to year. The Eagles need to make the most of the talent present in 2013 and choose wisely. So who might they choose? The Philadelphia Eagles hope that veteran offensive lineman Jake Scott can add some much needed help to their offensive line, signing him to a one-year contract on Monday.
The team hopes that Scott’s experience with Howard Mudd for four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts from 2004-07 will help him adjust to the Birds’ line quickly. The 6-5, 292 lineman most recently played for the Tennessee Titans from 2008 to 2011.
There is a chance that Scott will play right guard immediately, meaning that the other remaining players to line up at tackle are Demetress Bell, Dennis Kelly, and King Dunlap, whose name should now be synonymous with a swear word after his string of bone-headed moves on Sunday. Danny Watkins may return to practice this week after missing three games due to his mysterious ankle ailment. Continue reading ‘Philadelphia Eagles sign veteran Jake Scott to bolster offensive line’
The Philadelphia Eagles offensive line has already been decimated by injuries and Monday night’s game against the Saints saw yet another lineman fall with Todd Herremans making an early exit with a right ankle/foot injury. He was carted off to the locker room.
Demetress Bell filled in for Herremans at RT for the remainder of the game..
This means that for the majority of the game against the Saints, the only lineman who has experience starting for more than a full season season with the Eagles offense is LG Evan Mathis. Mathis is joined by King Dunlap at LT, in for the injured Jason Peters; Dallas Reynolds at center, who is in for Jason Kelce; Bell; and rookie Dennis Kelly at RG, in for Danny Watkins.
Herremans will receive an MRI on Tuesday morning to assess the extent of his injury.
Let’s hope the injury isn’t as bad as it looked and that Herremans can rejoin the struggling offensive line in the coming week so that a situation that is already bad doesn’t get even worse.

Defensive tackle Mike Patterson is back on the 53-man roster of the Philadelphia Eagles. The move to activate him was made on Saturday.
Patterson has shown that he had made a full recovery following his brain surgery for AVM, a condition that caused him to collapse in seizures at training camp in the summer of 2011. To make room for Patterson, the Eagles released linebacker Jason Williams.
Patterson is thrilled at his progress and the chance to once again be a healthy member of the Eagles.
“More than anything, I am excited to get back out here…I am just hoping to stay with the speed and just keep on working. That’s the only thing I have a concern with, just staying with the speed of the game.” Continue reading ‘Eagles Briefs: DT Mike Patterson activated to roster’
