Garrett Reid’s death ruled a heroin overdose

On Thursday came a reminder of the personal crisis facing Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid alongside his professional battle.

Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek released his report on the death of Garrett Reid, 29, the coach’s eldest son. It was what the family expected and alluded to in their initial statement about the tragedy: an accidental heroin overdose. The family responsed as follows:

“These results sadly confirmed what we had expected all along. We understood that Garrett’s long-standing battle with addiction was going to be difficult. He will, however, always have our family’s love and respect for the courage he showed in trying to overcome it. In the end, we take comfort in our faith and know that he’s in a better place. We miss Garrett. We miss his smile, his laugh, and his energy and we will forever love him.

“There are many other individuals and families engaged in this struggle in their own lives, and they will always have our support, encouragement, and understanding. Never give up!”

It’s wonderful the Reid family is keeping other families struggling with drug addiction close to their hearts as they continue to grieve  their loss.

Morning Muse: The life and death of Garrett Reid

If any positive comes from tragedy, it’s the expression of the common bond of our humanity. The Phillies, the 2nd most popular team in Philadelphia who are often rumored to have a rivalry with the number one Eagles, paid tribute to Garrett Reid on the Jumbotron at Citizen’s Bank Park on Sunday.

The sadness surrounding a child preceding their parent to the grave cuts across division rivalries, with the New York Giants sending their thoughts and prayers to the Reid family.

As was the case on Sunday, the day Garrett Reid was found dead in his room at Lehigh University, the Eagles will continue to push their shared grief and go through another day of practice overseen by Marty Morhinweg and Juan Castillo.

So many stories and about the Reid  family and the outpouring of sympathy from the NFL community has come out in the past 24 hours. Here is a selection of the highlights. Continue reading ‘Morning Muse: The life and death of Garrett Reid’

Andy Reid to resume coaching duties this week after tragic death of son

Eagles practice went on at Lehigh at the request of head coach Andy Reid despite the morning’s tragic events.

While Coach Reid went about the heartbreaking task of informing his family of the discovery of his eldest child’s lifeless body at his dorm room in Bethlehem on Sunday morning, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and defensive coordinator Juan Castillo took control of the morning’s walk-through. Philadelphia’s offensive and defensive coaches will continue in that role until Reid returns to practice.

All who learned of the tragedy have wanted to maintain a respectful silence and send prayers to the Reid family. Clearly, there is so much in life bigger than football. Questions raced at the back of everyone’s minds, but few dared to ask them. There will be time for that tomorrow and the next day.
