Philadelphia Eagles roster moves: WR Ron Johnson waived, Mike Brewer signed

WR Ron Johnson suffered an ankle injury widely described as “gruesome” at Eagles practice on Monday and for which he had surgery today. This led Johnson to being waived/injured by the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday. In his place, the team picked up former UFL receiver Andrew Brewer (6-3, 215).

Brewer is familiar to at least two people in the Eagles organization. He played with the Omaha Nighthawks for the 2010 and 2011 seasons under Rick Mueller, who currently works as a player personnel executive with Philadelphia.

The receiver went to Northwestern University, where he was teammates with  quarterback Mike Kafka and had a career total 76 catches for 1,118 yards and nine touchdowns.

It will be interesting to see if Brewer and Kafka are able to rekindle any remnants of their college chemistry in training camp. When the two last connected in 2009, Brewer set a school single-season record with an average of 16.2 yards per catch, pulling in 57 passes from Kafka for 925 yards and nine scores.

The Philadelphia Eagles just completed their first organized team activities (OTAs) of the 2012 offseason and are preparing for their second this week. The practices are, as head coach Andy Reid says, an opportunity for the team to “knock off some of the rust” accumulated from the offseason and provide an early glimpse into who may be a factor during the season.

The importance of Mike Vick’s backup cannot be overstated, as history shows that there is a strong likelihood that the player in this role will start at least a couple of games during the course of the season. With Vince Young now with the Buffalo Bills, the fight is on between Mike Kafka, Trent Edwards and Nick Foles for the number 2 spot. And it seems that Kafka is taking an early and decisive lead.
