Philadelphia Eagles injury update: Patterson hospitalized, Menkin to IR

DT Mike Patterson will be out for Sunday’s Philadelphia Eagles game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as he was hospitalized on Thursday.

Team officials believe that Patterson has viral pneumonia. They do not think that this is related to his brain surgery earlier this year, which caused him to miss the first seven games of the season.

Per Comcast Sportsnet,

although head trainer Rick Burkholder said the sickness isn’t severe or debilitating or even related to the brain surgery, Patterson is slated to undergo more tests that could potentially reveal another diagnosis.

As an interesting aside, Patterson and DE Trent Cole are the only members of the defensive line to have previous experience under defensive line coach Tommy Brasher.

In other injuries, Mike Vick and LeSean McCoy both remain in the fourth of five stages of recovery from their concussions. We know that Vick’s season is done, and that may well be the case for Shady also, even if he returns to health before the end of the season in order to give an opportunity for young players like Bryce Brown to continue to develop.

OT Nate Menkin was placed on IR with fractured cartilage in his throat (ouch). The Eagles have promoted  linebacker Ryan Rau (6-1, 230) to the active roster from the practice squad to take Menkin’s spot. Rau is a rookie free agent out of Portland State who made a positive impression on the team during offseason workouts and training camp.

Safety Kurt Coleman will also be out of Sunday’s game with a chest injury.

Philadelphia Eagles roster moves: LB Ryan Rau and DE Frank Trotter signed

The Philadelphia Eagles concluded mini-camp on Thursday. The team invited three players to join the team for practices on a tryout basis–WR Raymond Webber, LB Ryan Rau and DE Frank Trotter (no relation to Jeremiah) . It seems that two of the three impressed enough to get a spot on the roster, which now sits at 89 (90 is the maximum).

Rau (6-1, 230) was a four-year letterman at Portland State and ranks as the school’s all-time leader in games played. He accumulate287 tackles in his college career, leading the team in each of his final three season.

Trotter (6-2, 275) completed his college career at Memphis, where he was third on the school’s all-time list with 36.5 tackles for a loss, including a career-high 16.5 in 2010 (his junior year).  Overall, Trotter started 36 games and amassed 195 tackles and five sacks. He also earned the All-Conference USA honorable mention honors twice. He was signed as an UDFA by the Jaguars this year but was released in early May.
